'School of Yokohama' is the style of several Western photographers who were active in the rise of the Meiji period, after reopening to the western world. Francis Beato appears to be the first and reached areas of Japan where few westerners had ventured. In addition to photographing conventionally pleasing subjects, Beato also sought more macabre subject matter such as heads on display after decapitation and executions.
Other notable photographers of this period were Baron Raimund von Stillfried, Adolfo Farsari, and Japanese natives Ueno Hikoma, Ogawa Kazumasa & Kusakabe Kimbei.
