A very interesting early piece of Victorian mourning jewellery with original woven hair and very faded photograph. The 14 carat yellow case is really stunning and is very decorative with floral etchings throughout the gallery and section around the glass. Creating patterns with the hair from a loved one was very popular during the Victorian times, as a way of connecting with and memorialising the deceased. This hair is still intact in the original glass. The landscape oval cartouche has been engraved with A.E.R. in beautiful calligraphy. The photo on the other side of the locket is exposed which means the glass is missing as it would have been protected with glass originally. As the piece was not hallmarked, it was laser tested as 14 carat gold in the centre and outer rim is 10 carat gold. These deeply sentimental, unique examples of mourning jewellery are highly sought after by collectors.
