Delightful 14ct Yellow Gold Cameo Brooch & Pendant Farm Scene 16.9g
Cameos are a really pretty and amazing symbol of past and future, something to treasure as a family possession to be looked after for the next generation. There are so many varieties of cameos available, carved out of gemstones such as agate, onyx and sardonyx. Cameos have two layers of contrasting colours with often figurative carved into the stone or shell to create an almost three dimensional artwork. Cameo's can also be made out of shell, coral, lava (limestone from Pompeii) as well as plastic, resin and glass. The word 'Cameo' comes from the Italian word 'Cammeo' from medieval latin camaeus, of unknown origins. The meaning of a cameo is that it represents not a fictional character but more is an instantly recognisable portrait of a person or occasionally a place or flower.
As is the case with this particular example the cameo has a farm yard scene with a young lady standing near to what looks like a barn. It is a little more unusual, as most cameos depict a bust or portrait. This lovely cameo has a hidden bale to the rear, so it can be worn as a pendant and a brooch too. The cameo is hallmarked to the rear of the clasp with 14k. This more unusual subject cameo would be a fabulous addition to any collection.
