Description

The original 'Rattail' is one of the oldest patterns dating back to the 1750's. The name is derived from the unique rib running down the back of the piece of cutlery. This particular detail remains from the original Roman design, where a tongue of metal was used to join the two then seperate components such as the fork to the handle or a spoon bowl to the handle. This ridge detail then became an design aesthetic and became known as 'Rattail' pattern. The actual design is timeless, classic and feels really natural in the hand. This particular example is a large solid soup ladle with a rattail design to the rear and small front detail. The markings are Walker & Hall and the quality mark is A1. Walker & Hall were high quality EPNS and sterling silver producers from 1860 onwards. The condition of the ladle is good, it is antique and does show signs of use. This particular piece dates to around 1910 as the flag style and lettering, plus the lower case gothic style w in a shield cartouche date the ladle to this time period.
