Description
There is very good provenance accompanying this signed photo. I have taken a photograph of the letter (Not included in the sale) that was provided with the photo which explains in detail its history. Briefly RNZAF Wing Commander R J Sinclair formed a friendship with Onishi while both were being trained at the UK Air Base Netheravon during 1918 & 1919. Onishi handsigned and dated a large photo and presented it to Sinclair as a memento with a set of gold cufflinks (Sold before the photo was obtained). The photograph was actually taken while in the UK, see photo of the portrait studios sticker to rear. Also note to the rear Onishi’s posting at the time he signed the photo .. Yokosuka Naval Flying Station .. Early signed photo’s of Onishi are virtually impossible to obtain, add that to what occurred during WW2 and its significance makes it even rarer. The photo itself is on thick board and is quite large, measures 29cms x 19cms. Some stains and marks as per photo and is slightly curled. NOTE: Any other items mentioned in the letter are not for sale, it is only this photograph and nothing else.
