A most interesting large 1800s scrapbook containing an array of bookplates, drawings, photographs, paintings & a very detailed Indian map. The large photos are of Scotland, so the owner possibly resided in Scotland. The earliest dateable piece is a drawing initialed & dated 1833. There are 45+ large bookplates most appear to be from a book entitled “A Gallery of Illustrious Literay Characters” drawn by Daniel Maclise R.A under the pen name of Alfred Croquis. There are 24 drawings ranging from children’s drawings to drawings of incredible / quality detail. 13 Photographs including large photos by GWW, George Washington Wilson. 2 small Paintings of good quality & a largish pencil & crayon drawing of 2 small sailing ships on the water. Numerous neo-classical cutouts from books & magazines, a large colour bookplate & a small round colour plate, it took a while to work out the map, but I think it is an extremely detailed map of an area in India & quite possibly Military related, with the barracks in the centre. This could relate to two crudish drawings of an English Soldier in uniform & a Barracks in the scrapbook, possibly done by a sibling. This is also a short handwritten letter to Captain ??? The book is large & measures 28cms x 23cms when closed, the covers & spine are very worn with some losses, see last photo. There is foxing throughout with marks & stains. The book is not full, there are 7 pages to the rear & 4 pages to the front that are blank.
